Microsites as an SEO strategy

Getting your website to the search engine results for the key phrases you’ve targeted is a difficult task but if you have managed it then congratulations.

However just getting your main website to the top of the search engine results is not the end as you may want to consider implementing a microsite strategy.

A microsite strategy involves creating additional sites either brochure or ecommerce to promote your services or products.

The end goal of a microsite strategy is to have multiple different sites that promote your services or products in the top of search engines.

There are two main benefits to having multiple sites; one is that it can help your main website back link strategy if executed correctly and two if gives your offerings more shelf space in the search engines and more chance of being visited.

The microsites you create must be very different from your main site and very different from each other to avoid duplicated content penalties. If the content is identical, Google, Yahoo and Bing will discount the value of the microsites.

The microsites also need to perform in their own right. I suggest that microsites should be built around a single topic on your main site that you cover in two pages and expand the coverage on that topic to 50 pages, or if ecommerce a product class specific microsite. Here is an example of a microsite that has been created around Divan beds and is site that offers promotions on that products group. Cheap Divan Beds

By creating multiple microsites you can effectively block your competitors out of the top of the search engines. It is also a good technique to create your microsites with different brand names so when customers shop around or compare sites they don’t know that they are the same brand. By using the same brand for your microsites you will end up with higher bounce rates as visitors will click back to try another site for service or product comparison.

This is a fantastic way to easily double or triple your exposure to prospects because you’ve now got two or three sites selling for you, not just one. It’s like going from having only one sales person to having two or three sales people.

It is a good idea to create microsites on separate servers with unique ip ranges and even in different web technologies to avoid duplicate content penalties.

Google measures the authority of websites with the links that are pointed to it. If a page gets a lot of links to sit there is a high chance the page will be regarded as an authority. So far so good, but unfortunately it gets a little more complicated than this and the complication is the source of endless frustration for SEO consultants and website owners.

Anatomy of a Link

If page A links to page B then page A is recommending page B as a good page, page A like’s page B. This doesn’t apply when it has a nofollow tag. In a nutshell the nofollow tag allows links to be added to a page that create a click-able link to another page without the link passing a vote. These are used for text link adverts for example where they will send traffic to another page without passing a vote.

Why Links Are Important

Web pages secure the first position in Google by getting more links than other pages. But not all links are equal. Links from some pages carry more weight than from others and it is perfectly possible for a page with only 3 or 4 links to rank higher than a page with several hundred or even several thousand links. This is an area of link building that is poorly understood and why companies need to understand that quality of a link is far more important than quantity.

How to get good links?

Some SEO consultants will argue that any link is worth having (“a rising tide raises all ships”), they may be right. However knowing that links don’t all carry the same weight and securing quality height weighing links will have a much greater impact on your web pages. So how do you get links that carry weight? Simple, create something worth linking to! However this is really hard. It requires thought, planning, research, creativity and hard work and because of this most SEO consultants resort to link spam.

Link Spam
Most SEO consultants create low value link spam from places such as, forums, directories, blogs and micro sites. And if you think the best method for your site is this then there are countless SEO consultants who will build you a set number of links for a set fee.
Forums –
Forums is one of the most common forms of linking building as all it requires is for a user to place a signature link and reply to a few post. Search engines are now getting better at ignoring these links and forum owners are more and making external links nofollow.

Link farms
A link farm can have a vast number of websites and web pages within in, all under the control of the link building company. By having many websites the link building company can offer a set amount of links for a fee as they have plenty of websites to put the links. The problem with link farms is they can be discovered and when they are all links will cease to have any positive impact on the sites they link to. There are a number of variations on this where link building companies buy pages within legitimate websites in an attempt to appear credible.

Directories
Some directories are good as they help drive traffic to your web page, but most adopt no follow links and the ones they don’t the link have little weight and are classed as spam links to search engines.

Blogs
Blogs like this one are a favourite target for link spammers to leave comments to their client website. However a lot of good blogs are managed by their owners and if a popular blog may automatically but no follow on external links.

There are many different other ways link spammers use but by now I hope I have built you up a general picture. Link spammer create non merit links and in the long term will ultimately will stop working (usually within days or months as the search engines filter them out).
If you are going to use a SEO company that uses the techniques above then understand that potentially you might be building your house on sand. This is never a good idea.

Buying Links
There are many ways of buying links such as contacting website owners but by buying links you are in direct contravention of Google’s guidelines. If Google discovers your purchased links your site might be removed from their directory. In general they will simply remove any value from links you have bought rather than penalise you but the result could be the same.
So who buys link? Sadly most companies buy links and buying links can be very expensive with some website charging many thousands of pounds per year for a single link. Most sellers require ongoing payment to maintain the links you purchase and if you go down this route you need to have big pockets and run the risk of search engine spam busting teams.

How to Identify A Good Link Target

Find a website that is highly relevant to the subject of your website and is of high authority. Website with page rank higher than 5 are of high weight. Not only will this link be better for you in search engines but it is most likely to have more relevant traffic coming to your website from it. These links are long lasting and effective links with minimum effort.

Let’s use an example company Cheap Divan Beds Ltd, they sell a range of Divan beds in the UK from a range of local manufacturers. Contacting the suppliers and asking for a link simply because they sell the Divan beds is a quick way to get links. However creating a review on their products, on separate web site with video and then getting them to reference it on their site, will maybe result in the manufacturers other customers linking to it, which will then built up its own authority which then will become a valuable page that can be linked to the Cheap Divan Beds Ltd main website.

SEO - Cheap Divan Beds

It’s Monday morning I have just tweaked the Google Adwords account to remove some poor performing keywords. I sit at my desk thinking about the task I have been given by Home Furnishing. To get their website to first page of Google for the term “Cheap Divan Beds” within 2 month! Last week I quickly made some quick onsite SEO changes and built a few good quality links from a few of my own websites, but from here on it gets harder. I sit and ponder the best solution for these guys, with the limited resources I have. I quickly do a search in Google for “Cheap Divan Beds” great! The site has moved up two positions and is already on page 2 but page 1 is where we need to be.

I sit and ask myself what technique shall I use?

· Increase the websites internal site index with more Divan Bed Products and work on improving the internal SEO?

· Tedious low quality link building? (e.g. this blog)

· Pr link building. Maybe create a few Pr stories about new beds that are now available? What can you say about beds that would be worthy of news though?

· Ecommerce micro site that just sell Divan beds. The problem with creating a micro sites is that it is not going to give me the results I need within the 3 month time frame.

Where is my cup of tea I think? The young girl in my office tells me there is only one tea bag; I am nice and let her have it. I start day dreaming, I wish had premade websites created for every single business just to help me with SEO.

Maybe Google has gone wrong somewhere. SEO consultants are now just creating content for content sakes. Across the world thousands and thousands of servers are now just hosting websites, blogs that are just there to help with SEO. Shakes my head, it’s all gone wrong!! Thousands of people saying the same thing in different ways.

Gone are the good old days where onsite SEO was good enough to get you to the top and you would just wait for natural links to develop to your own site. Now it is just all so artificial and makes me think SEO isn’t even fun anymore.

To me good SEO is all about helping to develop a website that will have fantastic onsite optimisation and will generate its own content which will be good enough to generate its own external links. Offsite link building SEO should be banned! But Google has now put more weight on external Links than ever before. It is understandable as content spamming on sites was just becoming ridiculous.

I have another look at the website, the domain name HF4you.co.uk, frustrating!! I shake my head, why didn’t they choose a better domain name for SEO from the beginning. If it didn’t have a page rank of 4 I would be scrapping it. In fact I will suggest they go with a new domain name and I will migrate the page rank with Google web master tools.

The Domain name isn’t the only issue though, the site isn’t the best designed site and converts poorly and the onsite SEO is poor. This is frustrating as the backend office has lots of potential, shame I didn’t develop it I could make so many improvements.

If only I had a large development team and agency I would be unstoppable but for now I am just one SEO consultant among countless others, although I do think I’m one of the best SEO consultants in Yorkshire.

When you hire my SEO consultancy service, I want you to totally understand what you are getting for your money. I believe in total transparency in my work. There are a lot of so called "SEO consultants" who charge very low prices, promise you the world and don't deliver and it gives the industry a bad name.

SEO Keyword research

The first part of an SEO campaign is to do intensive keyword research to work out the terms we need to optimise your website for. I use several different programs to help me establish the best keywords, as well as using Google Adwords as an research tool to see which keywords would work best mixed with your PPC campaign.

This can take between 1/2 to 2 days of research depending on the size of your website and how many terms you want to optimise.
My price is £300 for 1/2 day and £500 for a full day

Once we have established the best keywords. I then have to perform onsite website optimisation. This is where I have to change the code and content of each page of the website to make sure it is optimised. This includes:

Page name
Image names
File names
Copy that has correct keyword density
H1 and H2 titles
Meta title
Meta description
Alt tags
Title link tags
Link structure
Optimise code to make websites load faster
Include Google analytic tracking code
Include Google web master control code
Submit to search engines

This usually takes around 30 minutes per page, depending how much copy has to be written.

So for the onsite optimisation, I charge £40 per page

Once your websites onsite optimisation is done. I will need to start building links to your website from quality sources. This is a time consuming process I use several ways to get links to you website:

Blog posts
Social media updates
Other quality website with good relevance and high page rank
Link baiting
Micro sites

This is an ongoing process and any company serious about their SEO should be wanting me to spend at least 1 day per month on their SEO to get good rankings. At £500 per month.

I also provide reports showing the progress of keywords, the increase in traffic and the conversation to leads or sales

Overall this will make your sales team more productive and increase your sales. I wouldn't recommend this strategy for long periods or outside of recessions as it has the negative effect of causing too much competition in the work place.
Once you come out of a recession you should quickly look to put your sales staff back onto fix salaries and introduce team building exercise and reward teams that perform well.

Reduce your prices: Win at all cost

If your business has long term staff that would cost your business heavily in redundancies if you had to let them go. It is better to do work at cost or at a slight loss to win the job than to have to lose skills and have to pay out not only in redundancies but in the future cost of having to replace and retain your staff.

With Pizarra I utilised my specific skill-sets to my best ability. Let me tell you, I found it a fantastic learning experience. Primarily I undertook intensive research. This was essentially to find the best way to be able to 'express' what the companies qualitative 'self-image' or 'brand identity' was to the wider consumers. I needed to create something that would enable efficient 'consumer familiarity' in an affectively powerful way. So, I developed the Brand name Pizarra. The reason for doing so was that it semantically had a dual meaning. Let me explain. Pizarra is the slate that the company uses and also the Spanish word for slate. So, immediately the two have a connotative meaning to the audience. Now, this is extremely important in the design and marketing world because people are affected semiotically. In our day to day world everything has meaning. It also conveyed a distinctive sense of style for the company. For Pizarra, all of these things helped to encourage a 'trust' in the reliability and quality of their product.

Taking this further, Pizarra's logo concept was an extension. I knew that it had to suggest 'prestige' and convey 'uniqueness' in a concise and simple way. So, I looked at the Greek alphabet. Now, the reason for this is that the Greek language is considered as being at the root of antiquity and has a 'classic quality' that conveys civilisation. People think of Homer and Socrates, the great 'enlightened thinkers' of the old world. It was not long before I came to the Greek letter π as a strong symbol. Π is sometimes written as Pi which is the first two letter of Pizarra. Remarkable and short.

The type face was then engraved into a representation of a square piece of slate. The finished article 'speaks' to the consumer and conveys the 'essence' of Pizarra. And, the sheer beauty of it is that the meanings become limitless to whoever looks at it. But it also takes them back to Pizarra.
